Bobby Fischer is Dead

Of all the places, it was in Japan that I would read the news that chess legend Bobby Fischer was dead. When I started taking photos of newspapers in the KKC lounge, I just needed to take a portable copy of the news as a kind of souvenir. But I didn't expect to reflect on the news and recall the admiration I had for a chess grandmaster.

Bobby Fischer is Dead

I was harboring thoughts of playing chess again before I came to Japan. And I was even planning to develop as a player using a replica of his playing repertoire. How could I have thought otherwise? He was the chess champion of my generation. And now, he is dead.

Samuel Becket wrote him a fitting epitaph, "There is no endgame between a man and his fate."
